Tourism to Ecology

I’m a Canadian-born Berliner and nature-loving landscape photographer. Up until now my photos have been used commercially, for travel guides, vacation rental apps, and the like.

Since 2021 I’ve been shooting more at home rather than abroad, focussing on ecological succession across Germany, as part of a project called Afterscapes – the entire series will be published in 2023.

The Photographic Spark

I was born and raised in Canada, but I have spent my entire adult life in Germany. I originally came to Europe as an exchange student, and just kind of stuck around.

Growing up I always had a creative drive, but it wasn’t obvious for me where to put it. So, I played it safe and studied business at university – a decent choice for any profession, in retrospect.

I ended up in technology and marketing roles at start-ups and large corporations. I was able to apply creativity to my work. However, I felt that I was barely scratching a very itchy itch.

One day in passing, a colleague mentioned that he’s found a good deal on a camera – then and there my face lit up. I somehow knew that was the outlet I was looking for, and that initial spark over time has become an inextinguishable, raging inferno.

(Don’t) Quit Your Day Job

It’s not easy to sit at a desk all day, when you have a passion you would like to pursue. I used the majority of my spare time on evenings, weekends and vacations to cultivate the fire I had going, and to take a lot of bad photos.

After a while I knew that if I wanted to make significant progress, I would have to devote more daylight hours to photography.

So, after 5 years at my last company, I actually did quit my day job – well my job as an employee at least. I still do work as a consultant and freelancer in the technology and marketing fields. I don’t know if I would want to give up using that part of the brain entirely.

Let’s Talk

I will be busy in the spring and summer of 2023 with Afterscapes, but would be interested in small jobs in Berlin and the surrounding area. Work with, or ideas for, projects about land restoration or ecological succession are of particular interest.

Having said that, I’m open to all ideas, so please get in touch: adam[at]vradenburg.de
